Te Iwi Matihiko – Our Digital Village is a values-based initiative that promotes digital wellbeing in New Zealand. Digital Natives Academy (DNA) partnered with Nomad Studios to create a series of workbooks tailored to schools, hapū, marae, and communities. These resources empower tamariki and rangatahi (youth), along with their whānau (families) and educators to safely and confidently navigate digital spaces.
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge was to develop a comprehensive set of resources, including workbooks, an inclusive curriculum guide, and an evaluation framework, all presented within a customised presentation folder. With distinct audiences of rangatahi, whānau, and educators, designing educational content required careful consideration of their unique needs from the resources at each touchpoint. The design needed to promote digital wellbeing among the rangatahi while engaging and facilitating ease of use for whānau and educators. In all instances, the presentation of information was to be clear, concise, and engaging - essential for effective workshop delivery and desired outcomes.
THE Solution
The overall workshop resources were titled "Te Iwi Matihiko - Our Digital Village" - a collection or hub of resources that foster growth, sustainability, and strength as a collective. The design prioritised straightforward layouts to support usability, enabling seamless navigation and effective teaching for teachers and tutors. Incorporating a strong Māori aesthetic, the design incorporated key cultural identifiers such as tiki, which were designed in a cartoon-style, allowing for versatility across all workshop content for all audience groups. Visual elements, including iconography and infographics, were extensively used to convey information, enhancing the efficiency and digestibility of information within the resources.
THE OUTCOME
In late 2021, Digital Natives Academy successfully launched the Te Iwi Matihiko workbooks and teaching resources. Nomad Studios designed both printed and digital collateral, which were distributed to schools, hapū, marae, and communities. These resources have played a crucial role in helping tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, teachers, and schools navigate digital spaces safely and confidently. With the ongoing work of Digital Natives Academy in the digital wellbeing space, the impact of Te Iwi Matihiko continues to grow, fostering digital literacy and wellbeing in communities across Aotearoa.
