IN A NUT SHELL
Startup Weekend Wellington is a high-energy, 54-hour event where teams come together to build a business from an early-stage idea and pitch it to the community. It's an exciting opportunity for participants to explore the world of startups, find the next big thing, or collaborate with like-minded entrepreneurs. Nomad Studios led the brand development of Startup Weekend Wellington 2019, and has since been used annually for Startup Weekend Wellington events.

THE CHALLENGE
Previous editions of Startup Weekend Wellington underwent an annual rebranding to match the theme of each year, resulting in minimal brand recognition and consistency. Seeking a constant identity, Nomad Studios worked with Startup Weekend Wellington to develop a new brand identity that represents the community-driven event and highlights the uniqueness of the Wellington region. With some design restraint, our challenge was to create a refreshed brand identity that adhered to set design guidelines of Startup Weekend’s parent company, while creating a versatile and unique brand that looked and felt intrinsically ‘Wellington’.

THE Solution
Drawing inspiration from Wellington's iconic landmarks—the Beehive, Cuba Street fountain, and the ever-present windy city, we crafted a visual identity that reflects the vibrant capital city. A beaker symbolising the regeneration of new ideas was added to align with the global Startup Weekend brand. The primary colour palette led with Wellington's identifier, a bold and striking yellow, and was complemented by dark charcoal and white, ensuring brand visibility across all materials and platforms. These brand elements were implemented across various editable templates, digital and print, to ensure consistency across all platforms, enabling seamless adaptation for future events regardless of who ran each annual event.

THE OUTCOME
The result of the Startup Weekend Wellington rebrand encompasses various visual elements, able to be from eye-catching signage and branded merchandise such as t-shirts, reusable cups, and bottles, to printed media. Since the launch of the rebrand in 2019, Startup Weekend Wellington has experienced significant growth in participant attendance expanded marketing and communication channels, and successfully secured long-term sponsorships and funding. The strengthened brand presence has solidified its position within the startup ecosystem in Wellington and continues to empower future entrepreneurial journeys in the heart of Wellington.
