Tauranga City Council’s Looking Forward presentation was created for the CEO to present and showcase the city’s progress, current state, and future plans to stakeholders and business partners. Covering population growth, housing, transport, community facilities, and investment projects, it told the story of Tauranga’s transformation over the past four years while looking ahead to what’s next. I designed a visually engaging deck to communicate these insights through bold and clear data visualisation.

THE CHALLENGE
The challenge was to take detailed information and complex projections and present them in a way that was clear, approachable, and visually engaging for a diverse audience. The design needed to simplify the data without losing important details, balance professionalism with bold colours that met accessibility requirements, and capture the energy and potential of Tauranga’s growth—all while ensuring the visuals reflected the city’s identity and didn’t overwhelm the audience.

THE Solution
I developed two design directions: a clean, flat vector style and a dynamic isometric style. The flat vector approach focused on simplicity and clarity, ensuring the data was easy to digest and visually straightforward. On the other hand, the isometric style added depth and dimension, offering a more engaging and immersive experience. Both directions brought Tauranga’s growth story to life, demonstrating how thoughtful visual design can make complex information not only accessible but also compelling and memorable.

THE OUTCOME
The final presentation balanced professionalism with visual appeal, making Tauranga’s growth story both clear and exciting. Feedback on the presentation design was that stakeholders appreciated how easy it was to grasp key points, with visuals that made the data stand out. While the flat vector style was chosen for its clean simplicity and clarity, the isometric style, showcased in my portfolio, highlighted the potential for immersive, layered storytelling. This project demonstrated how well-executed data visualisation can transform complex information into something simple, engaging, and impactful, fostering excitement for Tauranga’s future.
