IN A NUT SHELL
Te Kāuru is a collaborative initiative uniting 27 local government representatives across Aotearoa to address homelessness and housing stress. Rooted in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, this group leverages collective knowledge and experience to drive best practices and innovative solutions. While working with TCC, I played a key role in shaping the visual identity and style guide, developing a logo and collateral that encapsulates Te Kāuru’s mission of providing shelter and fostering interconnectedness.

THE CHALLENGE
The key challenge was to create a visual identity that honoured the cultural significance of the name Te Kāuru—symbolising a canopy offering shelter—while reflecting the collaborative spirit of the initiative. The design needed to resonate with diverse councils and communities, maintaining cultural appropriateness and accessibility across platforms. It also had to be flexible enough to support varied outputs, from forums to promotional materials with ease.

THE Solution
i developed a style guide and logo that embraced the canopy concept, incorporating an interconnected pattern to represent collaboration among all 27 councils and their communities. A clean, modern design aesthetic was paired with a natural colour palette inspired by Aotearoa’s landscapes, flora and fauna.

THE OUTCOME
The visual identity successfully launched Te Kāuru as a cohesive and professional entity. The style guide provided clear, adaptable branding across multiple channels and platforms. Councils praised the design for its balance of cultural respect and contemporary appeal, supporting the group’s mission to foster collaboration and reduce homelessness. This groundwork set the stage for impactful communication and engagement in future forums and initiatives. Te Kāuru is set to roll ou tin early 2025.
